Trenton Native Donates Sculpture to RWJ Hamilton
Crystal Canon on permanent display in Maurice T. Perilli Grounds For Healing® (3/8/2008)
HAMILTON, NEW JERSEY - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton (RWJ Hamilton) is pleased to announce the donation of Crystal Canyon, a sculpture crafted by local artisan and Trenton native Petro Hul.
The marble and sandstone sculpture has been on loan to the hospital since 2005 when it was first placed in the Maurice T. Perilli Grounds For Healing®, located adjacent to the hospital's main entrance. Thanks to Mr. Hul's generous donation, it will remain on permanent display for patients and visitors to enjoy.
The sculpture, made of polished white Yule marble that sits atop a rough-hewn sandstone base, was quarried and carved in Marble, Colorado, located within the Crystal River Gorge. Measuring over four feet high, the sculpture rises majestically and has no front or back, no beginning or end. "Crystal Canon is the third carving in a series of landscape sculptures which are based on my experiences hiking the canyons of the American Southwest," says Petro Hul. "The viewer is continually shown a glimpse of some prominence, concavity or texture which draws them around the entire sculpture."
Four Healing Gardens Promote Total Body/Mind Wellness
As the region's most forward-thinking healthcare provider, RWJ Hamilton is committed to healing the needs of the whole patient—body, mind and spirit. Four contemplative Grounds For Healing® (GFH) gardens are located throughout the campus and provide examples of the restorative powers made possible through the combination of art and nature. A partnership with the Hamilton, New Jersey-based Grounds For Sculpture (GFS), an internationally-recognized organization that promotes understanding and appreciation for contemporary sculpture, has helped fulfill the hospital's vision.

In addition to the Maurice T. Perilli GFH, there are three other gardens. The Bruce W. Bux GFH, located beyond a wall of windows at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Hamilton, is a private refuge where cancer treatment patients see and feel the beauty around them during their lengthy treatment plans. A third, the Christy Stephenson GFH, is located outside the hospital's Roma Bank Garden Café and provides a tranquil environment with running water and seating for dining visitors. Another, positioned between the hospital's emergency and maternity departments, is anchored by J. Seward Johnson, Jr.'s realistic presentation of a mother and child reading a picture book (No, Mommy, That One). This GFH is available for naming.
RWJ Hamilton Foundation Vice President Karla Stein, who handled Crystal Canon's transfer of ownership with Petro Hul, is pleased with the donation. "It is wonderful that this impressive sculpture now belongs to the hospital's permanent collection and we are quite grateful to Petro Hul for his generous contribution," she says.
The RWJ Hamilton Foundation offers opportunities for recognition within all Grounds For Healing at RWJ Hamilton. Donors may purchase and personalize a paver or bench to be placed in the GFH of their choice. For more information, please call the Foundation at 609.584.6581.
